The Saco River Bridge is a steel stringer bridge that carries the Maine Turnpike (Interstate 95) over the Saco River in Saco, Maine. The bridge is one of four significant bridges along Interstate 95 in Maine and is one of two significant bridges along the southern tolled section of I-95 between York and Augusta known as the Maine Turnpike. The Saco River Bridge is also the southernmost significant bridge located entirely in Maine, as the next bridge to the south on I-95 is the Piscataqua River Bridge which crosses between Maine & New Hampshire.
The Saco River Bridge originally opened in 1947. In 2018, the Maine Turnpike Authority significantly rehabilitated the bridge as part of a massive infrastructure revitalization project across the state, done in conjunction with the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT). This project repaired or replaced all of the major bridges along I-95, including the Saco River Bridge, along with the Androscoggin River Bridge, Kennebec River Bridge, and Penobscot River Bridge to the north. However, since the Saco River Bridge did not require a complete superstructure replacement, the bridge never had to be closed to traffic entirely.
While the Saco River Bridge itself does not have any independent toll facilities, the bridge is part of the tolled Maine Turnpike and therefore it is not possible to cross the bridge without paying at least one small toll on the turnpike. Toll rates for vehicles crossing the bridge vary from anywhere between $1.00 and $2.50 depending on the vehicle’s point of entry to the turnpike.
